Happy Endings?

Happy Endings by Margaret Atwood

A.

John and Mary fall in love and get married. They both have worthwhile and remunerative jobs which they find stimulating and challenging. They buy a charming house. Real estate values go up. Eventually, when they can afford live-in help, they have two children, to whom they are devoted. The children turn out well. John and Mary have a stimulating and challenging sex life and worthwhile friends. They go on fun vacations together. They retire. They both have hobbies which they find stimulating and challenging. Eventually they die. This is the end of the story.

Exactly! Have you ever read anything related to the philosophy of the absurd? My favorite book of all time is The Stranger by Albert Camus and this blog posting reminded a little about that.

For some reason, that's all some people aspire to have. We all want a happily-ever-after ending. To me, the journey that preceeds the termination is most important.

See that story is being told in third person it's what someone else perceives of their relationship. But what is really going on inside the relationship.

uh . . . .wow!

Yea. So clearly there is a WHOLE bunch left out because John & Mary have issues. John's brother is a low life that just got out of jail so he needed a place to stay. Mary only agreed if he helped out around the house and with the kids.

Notice how they kinda just brush over the kids. Them teenage years are a bitch! Them kids drove Mary to drinking, then she wrecks the BMW while driving under the influence, and this "hobby" started while she was doing community at the homeless shelter.

I can go on and on, but you get the gist of it!
